The gun store will charge you a fee for the background check, if the gun is an FFL transfer. Maybe this store just charged you anyway, to make a few extra bucks. It's probably a store charge, not a federal government charge.

Having said that, I thought it was more for long guns than handguns.

I had to pay it when I bought both of mine, but I did see them call some number with that yellow form in hand.

they call on everything I always get charged $5
even on trades they call in, with or with out a CCW
rifle or handgun,

I picked up an AR15 I had built,
a couple of weeks ago at the gun show only because it was 10 miles from my house, and I saved on shipping and transfer fees but still got charged the $5 and it was well worth it he was on hold for 45 min.

Now all they have to do is increase the fees at a steady pace and it become very unattractive to purchase firearms.

That's like McDonalds slapping on a 50 cent carbon tax to your drive-through order bill....I'd tell them to go stick it. It's part of overhead like power or rent or insurance or etc, so mark up accordingly. The ONLY add-on that should be expected (even if disagreeable) is sales tax. It's called a marketing scam when they are advertising a lower price to pull you in to buy but tack on other fees later (car dealers are notorious for this too--always negotiate an "out the door price"). I'm pretty sure it's illegal and violates some federal reg or another....

Anyway, rant aside, I've NEVER paid an extra fee for the background check on a gun that I was purchasing directly from the dealer and I would refuse to do so.

When I was filling out my paper work to have my Stag AR transfered through a local guy, he told me it would be $15 for handguns and $25 for long guns. When the AR came in, he only charged me the $15. I had dealt with him before so maybe he was cutting me a break.

Either they build it in to the price of the gun or they break it out on the invoice - either way, YOU pay it.

Advanced economics tidbit - no corporation ever pays taxes, fines, fees or any other governmental charge. It is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS passed on to people.

If you are in Wisconsin that is the fee for the handgun check. A store will usually not charge for the long gun background check or transfer fee. Hey be happy....Doyle wants to change that to $30. :36_1_32v:
